Thun
Thun is one of the bigger ‘cities’ in the area. It has a sweet, characteristic atmosphere and you can find both history and some of the modern shops here. Thun is especially nice if you’re looking for a good place to go out for dinner and enjoy a restaurant that isn’t a tourist trap.
Vera Calma
09:00 – I was craving some coffee and despite the bad weather, I was hot. Coffee and a nice place to sit was harder to find then I expected. I finally found Vera Calma, which looked nice inside and served fresh coffees and various cakes, breakfast plates and pies. Perfect to start finding my way around in Thun!
Explore Thun Castle and the historic town
10:00 – Time to explore the city center and castle. If you walk into town, you soon notice the old town and shopping area, that is divided into two levels and is built from old, historic houses. You soon cross the market square, where you can make your way up to the castle, which looms over the city. Make your way through the narrow alleys and take a tour in the castle.
If the weather is sunny, I recommend walking a bit along the Aare river, you can even walk to the Thun lake and enjoy the view on the lake, mountains and, far ahead, Interlaken and Spiez.
Lunch at Grottino 66
12:00 – Time to try out some lunch. I was in for a Flammkuchen and ended up at Grottino 66 on the waterside. The place isn’t too big or crowded and they serve a variety of flammkuchen and a daily lunch menu for a reasonable price. The staff is quite pleasant and it is nice to hang out and watch other people pass by while you’re enjoying a not too big of a lunch.
Shopping
13:30 – AsThun is a bit of a bigger city, it is nice to visit some of the shops hidden in either the historical part of town or hit the bigger shopping street where you can find brands like Only, WE etc.
I recommend two shops in particular that are worth a visit:
Oekoladen – your organic supermarket. Here you can find everything fresh, organic and natural, from rice to soap and deodorant. This is one of the only bigger organic shops in the area and is situated in the old town.
Aufgeweckt – looking for something small and cute? Walk into Aufgeweckt, where you can find simply nice things to have, beautiful postcards and stationary. Everything is made by hand by local producers.
Dinner at either Rama Thai or Parada 30
18:00 – I couldn’t choose, so I leave it up to you (or you can visit twice as I did). I am a sucker for a good Thai and Rama Thai has an amazing phad thai, but don’t forget to order a curry, which is loaded with lemon grass.
If you’re into Mexican, don’t miss out on Parada 30 (reservations are needed). It has simple style Mexican food, but you will love the burrito’s or wraps they serve you.
Both restaurants offer good value for money and simply a delicious meal.
